In the United States, hundreds of thousands
of total hip replacements (THRs)
are performed annually.

In THR surgeries, the portions of the hip joint that contain the damaged surfaces are
replaced with biocompatible devices that provide a smooth and painless range of motion.
Improved surgical technique and instrumentation have expanded the clinical indications
for THR to include patients who previously wouldn’t have been considered
eligible for this procedure.

When assessing a patient for hip surgery, basic tenets are applicable to all primary replacement and revision surgeries:

• Critical assessment of indications for surgery
• Clinical examination of the hip and related systems
• Appropriate radiographs and additional investigations
• Preoperative planning
• Meticulous surgical technique to minimize bone loss and maintain soft tissue balance
• A tailored rehabilitation protocol

At The Joint Replacement Center of NYC at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, we provide a continuum of the highest quality care for joint replacement patients from preoperative evaluation to the latest surgical procedures and postoperative rehabilitation programs.
